ViraFend® Frequently Asked Questions

Are Cold Sores Really Herpes?

Yes. Cold Sores, or ‘Fever Blisters’ are indeed caused by the Herpes Simplex Type 1 virus.  This is one of the most common virus infections in the world.  The World Health Organization (WHO) recently reported that as many as 80% of the world’s population has a herpes virus infection.

The term ‘cold sore’ was coined to be a more ‘friendly’ term during a time when having a herpes infection was widely ridiculed and many people believed that having herpes was a sign of promiscuity – it is NOT.  The majority of herpes infections are acquired through casual contact with an infected person (such as a child getting a ‘familial kiss’ from a parent, grandparent, uncle or aunt, or family friend who has a herpes infection – even if they do not have an active outbreak at the moment, or even know they have herpes).  This can occur even if that person was not experiencing an active cold sore outbreak at the time.  Most herpes infections occur in childhood, but may not show up for years.

Does ViraFend Cure A Herpes Virus Infection?

There is no ‘cure’ for a herpes infection.  Once the herpes virus is inside the body, it stays there for life.  For many people, following a first outbreak, the virus falls into a ‘dormant’ period, residing in the nerve ganglia (groups of nerve cells) in either the facial area or the genital area.  Certain triggers (such as specific foods, trauma or injuries, and certainly stress may re-awaken the virus, stimulating it to start replicating again, and this can lead to a subsequent outbreak.

While there is no cure (regardless of what you may read on other websites), it is possible to impact and regulate the replication of the virus to try and keep the viral load low, with the objective of reducing the likelihood of an outbreak.  ViraFend® does not kill the virus; it works by impeding the virus’ ability to attach to a human host cell (the first stage of the virus life cycle), which is necessary for the virus to insert its DNA into the host cell, and use the host cell as an incubator to reproduce new virus generations.  No attachment = no reproduction.  The objective of ViraFend® is to impede virus attachment, to help regulate virus replication and to boost the immune system’s ability to fight off the attacking virus.

Am I Still Contagious If I’m Taking ViraFend?

People infected with the herpes virus (responsible for causing cold sore outbreaks) can transmit the virus to another person both during an active outbreak, or in between outbreaks through direct transfer of infected bodily fluids or through ‘viral shedding’, where infected skin cells shed from an infected person to a non-infected person.

It’s important to understand how viruses reproduce AND how viruses like the herpes virus can be transmitted.  While ViraFend® interferes with the virus’ ability to attach to host cells, this alone is not sufficient to prevent transmitting the virus to another person.  However, the lower your viral load, the less virus you have to transmit, although it is indeed possible to infect another with even a few viral particles.

Will ViraFend Help With Genital Herpes Infections?

ViraFend® is a Virus Attachment Regulator whose active ingredient – Activated Humic Acid – has been shown to impede virus attachment for a wide range of viruses in the herpes virus family, including HSV-1 (the primary cause of oral or facial herpes infections and cold sores), as well as HSV-2 (the primary cause of genital herpes infections), and for a wide range of flu viruses and the shingles virus, among others.

Can I Take ViraFend With My Valtrex® Prescription?

Yes. You can take ViraFend® with any other medicine, including anti-viral prescription medications as prescribed by your doctor, including acyclovir and valacyclovir.  There are no known negative interactions between ViraFend® (a natural dietary supplement) and any medication.  There are also no known side-effects, which may often occur with prescription medications.

Does ViraFend Work On Other Viruses In Addition To The Cold Sore Or Herpes Virus?

Scientific tests and clinical studies have demonstrated that the active ingredient in ViraFend® – Activated Humic Acid – is a significant Virus Attachment Inhibitor for a wide range of viruses on which it has been tested, including the range of Herpes viruses, a wide range of influenza viruses, and many others.

Since all viruses that affect humans work in the same way – through the Viral Life Cycle of Attachment through Replication through Release – ViraFend’s mechanism of action has been shown to work similarly across a wide range of different viruses.

Is ViraFend® Safe For Children?

The directions for use for ViraFend® state that it should be used by adults and children over 12 years of age or older.  Please follow all directions as stated.  If you have any questions, always consult your doctor first.  To date, all scientific tests on ViraFend’s active ingredient – Activated Humic Acid – have shown no toxicity, no allergic reactions, no contraindications with other medications, and no known side effects.

But again, if you have any questions, always ask your doctor before using this or any other product, especially with children.

Do Cold Sore Ointments And Lip Balms Work?

There are many lip balms, ointments and creams that are marketed for relief of cold sore symptoms – the key work being ‘symptoms’.  Most cold sore ointments are liquids, gels or lip balm formulations which contain analgesics, hydrating or calming ingredients which can dampen the pain of a cold sore outbreak, or contain drying agents to try to heal blisters faster.

Abreva® is the only FDA-approved Over-The-Counter (no prescription required) cold sore product indicated to actually shorten the healing time of an outbreak, as its ingredient actually impacts the virus itself, and this may shorten the healing time by several days or more (an average herpes outbreak can last as long as several weeks).

ViraFend® works in a different way – as a Virus Attachment Regulator, to interfere with the virus’s ability to attach itself to a host cell prior to reproduction. For this reason we recommend ViraFend® be taken daily (like a vitamin would be) to help regulate viral replication before outbreaks occur.  If a virus cannot attach to a human host cell, it cannot reproduce.
